Panama

Directly between North and South America sits Panama, the Canal, and a stamp on human ingenuity.

Nowhere else in the world can you experience a sunrise on the Pacific, with a sunset on the Atlantic.

Panama mixes both old and new, with the contrast of modern skyscrapers against colonial buildings.

It offers historical value as well as strong cultural presence.

Here you will find information and pictures from the following locations:

EMBERA TRIBE VILLAGE  (PANAMA CITY)

SAN BLAS ISLANDS

THE PANAMA CANAL

EMBERA TRIBE VILLAGE (PANAMA CITY)

Accessible from Panama City, this tour will allow you to immerse yourself in the culture of Panama with a unique and special visit to an Embera Tribe Village.

Here you will be greeted by one the indigenous groups living in the Panama providence of Chagres National Park.

These people have existed independently from the rest of the country for centuries, which has allowed them to remain rooted deep in their cultural and traditional practices.

Embera people are very open to sharing their culture with visitors and this unique opportunity gives you a chance to embrace local customs.

GETTING THERE:

A tour to the Embera Tribe Village must be booked out of Panama City (PTY), which involves a one-hour drive and then an additional hour ride via canoe to the village.

SAN BLAS ISLANDS

These tiny civilizations each sit on an island within the archipelago consisting of about 365 islands and cays, 49 of which are inhabited.

This is an excellent way to get a taste of what life is like in this small community that is completely isolated.

Locals from the island tend to row towards cruise ships, in an effort to collect donations from traveling guests.

GETTING THERE:

The easiest way to reach the San Blas Islands is from Panama City (PTY).

From here you will need to get to Puerto de Carti either via private car hire or tour operator.

From there, you will board a boat that takes you to the islands.  If boat rides are not your thing,  there is also the option of flying directly into one of San Blas' smaller airports.

THE PANAMA CANAL

One of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World, the Panama Canal, was one the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, thus resulting in a direct connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean and eliminating the otherwise 7,900-mile trip around South America.

This conduit of maritime trade consists of artificial lakes, channels, and 3 sets of locks, all stretching across 50 miles worth of transit.  As ships enter each section, water fills in order to raise it to the next level, one "step" at a time.

Many people wish to pass the canal as part of their journey when traveling the Caribbean, however not many are lucky enough to actually walk on the canal itself.

My job as a photographer allowed me this opportunity in order to capture the process of the ship making its way through this innovative method of transportation.

GETTING THERE:

The only way to transit the Panama Canal is via water vessel, however you may also visit the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center which is located just outside Panama City (PTY) and is easily reachable from the center.

It features an interactive museum where you can learn about the history and operations of the canal and also has several viewing platforms where you can watch the transit ships enter the lock gates.
