A trip to the American Southwest not only has the ability to transport you to a prehistoric era, but it also gives you a sensation of being on another planet. 

Similar to the geology of what it might be like to visit Mars, the southwest offers rich and colorful rock formations both beneath and above the surface of the ground.

Although mostly hot and dry, there are still many bodies of water found throughout. 

During fall and winter, it is also not uncommon to find snow in the northern regions.

Lots of hiking, biking, boating and adventures await in this land before time.

UTAH

Scenic Driving in Utah is like no other. 

Literally a journey through time, you are surrounded by incredible rock formations and never-ending desert filled with dinosaur fossils. 

Some main parks worth visiting (and pictured below) are Arches, Bryce Canyon, Goblin Valley and Canyonlands. 

GETTING THERE:

The most common airport to fly into will be Salt Lake City (SLC), however it is approximately 4 hours from most of the national parks. 

Depending on where you want to go, Moab (for access to Canyonlands/Arches National Park) also has its own airport (CNY). 

Flying into SGU Regional Airport (SGU) will get you within about an hour of Zion, and Cedar City Regional Airport (CDC) is approximately 2 hours from Bryce Canyon.

ARIZONA

In the land of the saguaro cactus, these plants can reach 70 ft tall and weigh as much as a ton. 

They are the largest cacti in the U.S. and can be found spotted all over Arizona, including a dense concentration in Saguaro National Park. 

This desert land is also home to many bodies of water, incredible sunsets, and the Apache Trail. 

Some of the most famous parks (pictured below) include The Grand Canyon, Zion, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.

GETTING THERE:

The most common airport to fly into will be Phoenix (PHX), which is approximately 3.5 hours from the South Rim entrance of The Grand Canyon. 

Flagstaff does offer a regional airport as well (FLG) that is approximately 90 minutes from the park. 

Another option is flying to Las Vegas (LAS) and traveling from there, which is approximately 2.5 hours to the West Rim entrance.
